Summer break isn’t just about sun and relaxation—it’s a prime opportunity for students to get ahead academically, especially as they inch closer to graduation. Whether you’re a rising senior in the Class of 2026, rising junior in the Class of 2027, or rising sophomore in the Class of 2028, what you do this summer can shape your academic path for the next year—and beyond.

Rising Seniors (Class of 2026): One Last Shot at Test Scores

If you haven’t taken the SAT or ACT yet—or you’re not happy with your scores—this summer is your final window to prep, test, and raise your scores before fall college applications.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • The SAT has added a new national test date on September 13, 2025, with results available in time for most college application deadlines.
  • Additional ACT changes go into effect in August 2025. We recommend students take the paper-based ACT this summer while it’s still familiar and widely understood by colleges.
  • Even if your GPA is strong, low test scores can hurt your chances, especially for competitive programs or scholarships.
  • Applying early action or early decision? Many deadlines hit by November 1, so you need scores finalized by then.

Action Plan for Rising Seniors:

  • Enroll in a summer test prep course to improve test scores
  • Choose your SAT/ACT test dates and register early
  • Take at least one full-length practice test under timed conditions. Huntington test prep programs include practice tests
  • Refine test strategies and focus on weak areas while tutoring

Rising Juniors (Class of 2027): The Prime Time to Prepare

Summer before junior year is the sweet spot for test prep. You’re far enough from college applications to prep stress-free, but close enough to take advantage of early test dates.

Why prep this summer?

  • You’ll have more time to prepare without spring distractions like sports, finals, and AP exams.
  • Testing in early fall means you have time to retake the test in winter or spring if needed.
  • Solid test prep now can also boost your grades in school since you’re sharpening core academic skills.

Your Timeline:

  • Prep over the summer
  • Test early fall of junior year (September/October)
  • Retake if needed in winter or spring

Starting early sets you up for success—not stress.

Rising Sophomores (Class of 2028): Think Two Years Ahead

It might feel early, but now is the time to set yourself up for long-term success. Sophomore summer is about building skills, exploring test formats, and getting familiar with the road ahead.

Here’s why it matters:

  • The 10th grade PSAT is your practice round. It doesn’t count for National Merit but gives a solid baseline.
  • The 11th grade PSAT/NMSQT can lead to National Merit Scholarships—a high score here can unlock huge opportunities.
  • Prepping now helps you get ahead of the curve, both academically and mentally, heading into junior year.

Summer Goals for Rising Sophomores:

  • Try a PSAT or Pre-ACT test to see where you stand
  • Start tutoring in reading, writing, or math to build core skills
  • Build strong study habits that will carry you through high school
  • Read regularly to build vocabulary and comprehension

Why Summer Test Prep Matters for Every Class

Whether you’re trying to earn scholarships, boost your GPA, or build confidence, summer is the time to take control. There’s less pressure, more flexibility, and more time to focus. The earlier you start, the more choices you’ll have when it counts.

Think of test prep as training for a race—you don’t wait until the night before to stretch. You train consistently, build stamina, and show up ready to win.
