Starting in the 2026–2027 school year, Virginia’s Standards of Learning (SOLs) are getting a major update—and these changes will impact students from 3rd through 11th grade. From a new scoring system to more rigorous academic standards, families across the state will need to adjust to a new way of measuring student success.
At Huntington Learning Center, we’re here to help parents understand what’s changing, why it matters, and how to support their child through it all.
- New 100-Point Scoring Scale
-
- What’s Changing: SOLs will now be scored on a 100-point scale, replacing the previous 600-point system.
-
- How Huntington Can Help: Our tutors help students understand how this new scale works and what it means for their performance, ensuring they’re confident and prepared for every test.
- SOL Scores Count Toward Final Grades
-
- What’s Changing: For grades 7–12, SOL scores will count for at least 10% of a student’s final course grade.
-
- How Huntington Can Help: We offer targeted test prep and academic support to help students boost their scores—especially on the first attempt, which now carries more weight.
- End-of-Year Testing Window
-
- What’s Changing: Most end-of-course SOLs will be administered during the final two weeks of school.
-
- How Huntington Can Help: Our flexible scheduling—including evenings and weekends—ensures students get the support they need right up to test day.
-
- What’s Changing: Students may retake tests, but only the score from the first attempt will count toward their final grade.
-
- How Huntington Can Help: We focus on first-attempt success through personalized instruction and proven test-taking strategies.
- Transparent Score Reports
-
- What’s Changing: Parents will receive detailed score reports comparing their child’s performance to peers at the school, district, and state levels.
-
- How Huntington Can Help: We provide regular progress updates and insights so parents can track their child’s growth and stay informed—just like the new SOL reports.
- More Rigorous Academic Standards
-
- What’s Changing: SOL tests are being revised to reflect higher expectations and align with new academic standards.
-
- How Huntington Can Help: Our curriculum is aligned with Virginia’s updated standards, helping students build the skills they need to meet—and exceed—these new benchmarks.
- Higher Cut Scores for Reading & Math
-
- What’s Changing: Beginning spring 2026, Virginia will phase in higher cut scores to better reflect true mastery.
-
- How Huntington Can Help: We offer focused support in reading and math to help students meet these elevated expectations with confidence.
