New Year, New Goals: Setting Academic Resolutions for Success

Share

January is the perfect time for students and families to reflect on past achievements and set goals for the year ahead. Whether you have an elementary school-age child just learning to read or a high school age child preparing to take the SAT/ACT, academic resolutions can help students build momentum, improve their performance, and foster lifelong learning habits.

Like any new goal or resolution, the most important part is sticking with it! So, how do you set goals that last?

When working toward achieving your goals, you want to be SMART.

Unlike vague ambitions, the SMART framework can help you and your child set goals with a clear roadmap for success.

SMART goals are:

  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Achievable
  • Relevant
  • Time-Bound

A Team Approach to Goal setting For the New Year

Find a time when you and your child can sit down to discuss goal setting for the new year. Working with your child to create academic resolutions can give them a sense of ownership in the process. Working together to track their progress can help boost motivation and accountability.

Here are some tips to help guide your family as you set goals in the new year.

Help Your Student Create SMART Academic Goals

  1. Identify the Most Impactful Areas
Work with your child to pinpoint the areas that will make the biggest difference in their academic journey. Whether it’s improving a specific subject, developing better study skills, or preparing for a High School Entrance Exam, focusing on what matters most ensures their efforts are impactful.
  2. Break It Down
Help your child divide their goals into smaller, actionable steps. For example, if they want to improve their ACT score, the first step might be devoting time to practice tests and an ACT Prep Program.
  3. Set a Timeline Together
Collaborate with your child to set realistic deadlines for each step. For instance, “Complete three chapters of biology notes by the end of the week.” A timeline ensures goals are manageable and keeps them on track.
  4. Track Progress
Regularly review their progress together to help them stay focused and adjust goals as needed. A student goal tracker could be a sticker chart, planner, or digital app. These tools are a great way to track achievements visually and make progress tangible and rewarding.
  5. Celebrate Their Success
Recognize and celebrate your child’s accomplishments regularly. Whether earning a higher grade on a test or writing their assignments in a planner every day of the week, positive reinforcement builds confidence and keeps them motivated to continue striving for their goals.

With these steps, you’ll guide your student in creating SMART meaningful goals while instilling the habits and motivation needed for long-term success.
