As spring test dates approach, educators play an essential role in helping students and their families navigate this crucial time

Standardized tests like the SAT and ACT can have a significant impact on students’ futures, from college admissions to scholarships. As a teacher, you are uniquely positioned to provide structure, encouragement, and resources that students need to prepare effectively.

With the right strategy and your support, students can tackle content review and practice tests while balancing their regular coursework.

Below is a comprehensive spring SAT prep timeline and ACT prep schedule for January that you can use as a guideline as you help your students navigate this important time.

Week 1: Set the Foundation

  • Goal Setting: First, help students determine which test—the SAT or ACT—aligns better with their post-high school plans. Factors such as college requirements, scholarship opportunities, and personal strengths should guide their decision.
  • Prepare for Upcoming Changes: Beginning in April 2025 for the National Online Test Day, students registering for the digital/online test will see the new, updated ACT Core Test with optional Science & Writing sections; students taking the paper-based test will continue to see the current, full-length ACT for the April, June, and July 2025 test dates. Starting with the September 2025 National Test Day, all test takers will see the ACT Core Test with optional Science & Writing. Students testing as part of a District/School Day administration, either digital/online or on paper, will continue seeing the current, full-length ACT through the end of 2025. Help your students understand the differences between these testing options and what might be the right choice for them.
  • Create a Schedule: Help your students develop a test prep checklist that incorporates daily and weekly goals.
  • Gather Materials: Guide your students toward official SAT/ACT prep guides and online resources, or consider suggesting professional tutoring services.
  • Mark Deadlines: Create visual reminders in your classroom to help students remember to register for spring test dates early to avoid late fees.

Week 2-3: Content Review

  • Focus on Weak Areas: You know your students best. Help students to prioritize sections where they need improvement, such as math, reading, or science. If some of your students are struggling in similar areas, consider taking 10 minutes to review key concepts at the beginning of class each day.
  • Integrate Classwork: If possible, incorporate test prep questions into your daily lessons and curriculum. Consider adapting some of your quizzes to tests with similar wording and formatting they might see on standardized tests.
  • Work Together: Encourage students to work together to create study groups. As a teacher, you could share practice problems and encourage students to use question banks or apps for extra practice.

Week 4: Practice Tests

  • Simulate Test Day: If your curriculum schedule allows, have students take a full-length practice test under timed conditions to build stamina and familiarity with the format. If you’re short on time, just take the test portion related to the subject you teach.
  • Review Results: Help students analyze their scores to identify strengths and weaknesses.

Week 5-6: Strategy Development

  • Teach Test-Taking Techniques: Share strategies like time management, process of elimination, and guessing strategies.
  • Focus on Confidence: Encourage positive self-talk and mindfulness to reduce test anxiety as test dates approach.

Week 7: Final Review

  • Practice Again: Encourage students to take one more full-length practice test to solidify their strategies.
  • Celebrate Progress: Acknowledge your students’ hard work to keep motivation high.
  • Encourage Self-Care: Remind students to balance studying with rest, nutrition, and physical activity.
