Neuroscience Meets Personalized Learning

Share

For nearly five decades, Huntington Learning Center has been pioneering educational approaches that align with how the brain naturally learns. Long before brain-based learning emerged as an educational framework, our founders understood that effective teaching must work with the brain’s natural learning processes. Today, neuroscience research validates what we’ve practiced all along: personalized, systematic instruction that supports neural growth and academic success.

The Neuroscience Foundation of the Huntington Method

Our 4-step framework aligns educational best practices with the brain’s natural learning and information processing. Each phase of the Huntington Method supports brain processes that educational neuroscience has identified as necessary for lasting learning.

Step 1: Comprehensive Academic Evaluation

Our extensive evaluation process creates a detailed assessment of each student’s learning strengths and challenges. During evaluation, our certified tutors observe how students process information across different modalities (visual, auditory, and kinesthetic), maintain attention, approach problem-solving, and handle frustration. This comprehensive assessment reveals the unique learning profile of each student, enabling us to identify what a student struggles with and why those struggles occur.

Step 2: Personalized Tutoring Plans

Brain-based learning centers on neuroplasticity, the process by which the brain remaps its connections when learning new concepts. Our personalized tutoring plans help harness this remarkable capacity for growth and change. Each plan targets specific learning needs based on the student’s evaluation results. For example, we incorporate strategies that strengthen executive function skills, including working memory exercises, attention-regulation techniques, and impulse control strategies to help students with executive function deficits. Reading and writing interventions target language processing areas, and those using multisensory approaches engage multiple brain regions, which helps enhance retention. Our math interventions activate analytical and spatial processing centers. This enables students to develop a solid numerical understanding through multiple pathways.

Step 3: Customized Learning

Creating ideal conditions for neural growth is at the heart of brain-based learning. Huntington’s customized learning approach incorporates key principles from neuroscience. The brain’s threat detection system (the amygdala) can hijack learning when students feel anxious or overwhelmed. Our tutors create emotionally safe environments that keep students in their optimal learning zone, which supports emotional regulation. We use spaced intervals for review and practice, which supports consolidating memories in long-term storage. We activate multiple brain networks simultaneously through visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning approaches, creating stronger neural pathways. Our tutors carefully assess the complexity of tasks to avoid overwhelming working memory while maintaining appropriate challenge levels for neural growth.

Step 4: Continuous Progress Monitoring and Learning Adaptation

The brain’s learning process is dynamic and constantly evolving. Neuroscience research suggests that effective learning requires continuous feedback loops, enabling the brain to adjust and strengthen neural pathways. Our comprehensive progress monitoring system is designed to support this natural process of learning and growth. Our feedback system keeps you informed about your child’s learning development and academic progress, and our tutors are constantly adjusting their plans based on student learning responses. Our progress reports help parents understand what their child has learned as well as how they are developing new capabilities.

How Huntington Can Help Support Your Students
