April is National Math and Statistics Awareness Month, a time to recognize the importance of mathematics in education, careers, and everyday life.
Why Math is Important
From early childhood to high school and beyond, math plays a foundational role in problem-solving, logical thinking, and decision-making. Math opens the doors for careers in accounting, engineering, finance and more. Whether taking on a home improvement project, cooking, or budgeting finances, it’s easy to see why math is useful.
While we celebrate the value of math, it’s also an opportunity to focus on helping students reach their full potential.
How Are Students Performing in Math?
The Nation’s Report Card on mathematics provides some broad insights into student performance and highlights areas where additional support can make a difference.
The latest results from The Nation’s Report Card on math show that many students are struggling.
According to the 2024 Nation’s Report Card, only 39% of fourth graders and 28% of eighth graders scored at or above the proficient level in math. These results indicate that many students are falling behind in essential math skills, which can impact their academic future.
Parents need to understand that math is cumulative, and gaps in understanding math at an early stage will make it harder for students to succeed in advanced math concepts later on. This is why it’s crucial that students meet important math milestones from elementary through middle school.
By strengthening early math skills and building confidence, we can ensure students stay on track with key math milestones at every grade level, setting them up for long-term success.
While math curriculums may vary from district to district, math milestones can help parents and educators better understand what students should be learning at each stage.
Kindergarten – 2nd Grade:
Students should develop number sense, counting skills, and basic addition and subtraction. Understanding place value and simple word problems set the foundation for future math success.
3rd – 4th Grade:
Multiplication and division become key skills. By the end of fourth grade, students should know multiplication tables, understand fractions, and begin working with decimals. Mastering these concepts is crucial, as they are the basis for more advanced math in later grades.
5th – 6th Grade:
Fractions, decimals, and percentages take center stage, along with an introduction to ratios and early algebraic thinking. These skills prepare students for the transition to middle school math, where concepts become more complex.
7th – 8th Grade:
Middle school math is a critical turning point. Students begin working with linear equations, geometry, and data analysis. This is also when students are placed into math tracks—a decision that can impact their high school and college readiness. Advanced students typically take pre-algebra in seventh grade and algebra in eighth grade, setting them up for higher-level math like calculus in high school.
One of the most important aspects of math education is ensuring students are on track early.
Math builds on previous knowledge, and falling behind in elementary school can make it difficult to move into advanced math courses later on. Many high schools place students in specific math tracks as early as middle school and moving between tracks can be challenging. This means that a strong foundation in elementary and middle school math can open doors to higher-level coursework and competitive college admissions.
