Balancing Summer Fun and Summer Tutoring: A Guide for Busy Families

Summer brings a welcome change of pace — and for many families, a very full calendar. Between vacations, camps, part-time jobs, and days at the pool, it’s no surprise that academics can easily take a backseat. But even just a little learning each week can help students avoid the summer slide and start the school year strong.

The good news? Summer studying doesn’t have to dominate your plans. In fact, when done right, learning can fit naturally into your family’s summer rhythm. Whether that’s reviewing last year’s math concepts for 20 minutes every other day or sneaking in educational experiences while traveling.

Being intentional with your time this summer can set your child up for success in the next school year.

We encourage parents to help their children strike the right balance between summer fun and learning. Academic progress doesn’t have to take over your child’s summer — just a little structure and consistency can go a long way.

Try these three steps for summer success.

Step 1: Know What to Make Time For

Start by identifying what’s on your child’s summer radar. Most students need to balance three categories:

  • Fun – Vacation, camps, hobbies, downtime
  • Work – Chores, internships, part-time jobs
  • Academics – Summer studying, reviewing challenging topics, reading, and test prep

All three matter, but academics need to be intentionally scheduled, not squeezed in “if there’s time.”

Step 2: Build a Balanced Schedule

Once you know what needs to be prioritized, start blocking time on a calendar. Try a family whiteboard, a color-coded planner, or a shared digital app to keep everyone on the same page.

Here are a few ideas to keep learning manageable and meaningful:

  • Daily Reading – Just 30 minutes a day can make a big difference. Read together as a family, start a mini book club, or join our Reading Adventure Program to make reading more fun and engaging.
  • Learning on the Go – Heading out of town? Visit a museum, science center, or historical site along the way. Even nature hikes or farmers’ markets can offer educational moments worth talking about.
  • Skill Review – Every other day, set aside 15 to 20 minutes for a quick skills review using flashcards, workbooks, and quizzes. Review past assignments or projects to reinforce learned concepts.
  • Tutoring Support – Tutoring can be a great way to add some structured support and accountability. Whether your child needs help studying for the ACT/ SAT or needs additional help in math or reading, a certified tutor can help reinforce skills and boost confidence without interfering with summer fun.

Step 3: Reward Your Child for a Job Well Done

Kids thrive on positive reinforcement, especially when they’re balancing schoolwork with summer fun. Celebrate their consistency and effort, no matter how small. Did they read every day this week? Stick with their tutoring sessions without complaining? Finish a challenging review worksheet? Acknowledge it!

Rewards don’t have to be extravagant. It could be a trip for ice cream, a movie night, extra screen time, or even letting your child pick the weekend family activity. Creating small incentives helps kids stay motivated and reminds them that hard work pays off. A little praise goes a long way. A simple “I’m proud of you” can boost their confidence more than you might think.

Keep Academics from Slipping to the Bottom of the List

Summer can get busy fast, but making space for academic growth is one of the best ways to help students stay sharp and confident when school resumes. Even small, consistent sessions throughout the summer are more effective than cramming in August.
