Elementary School Tutoring For Grades K-5

Students kindergarten through fifth grade go through pivotal transformations during their elementary school years as they are introduced to new subjects and learning experiences. Providing them with the tools they need to meet these challenges gives them the motivation, confidence and skills to succeed in school and beyond. At Huntington Learning Center, we understand the importance of childhood learning experiences and design elementary school tutoring programs that are individualized, interactive, challenging and fun for students.

Elementary School Subjects We Offer:

Reading & Phonics

Fostering A Strong Reading Skills Foundation

Strong reading and comprehension skills are important for students to be able to learn independently in every elementary school subject. Students will use reading skills in every facet of the classroom from textbook content to test directions, math word problems and more.

Our elementary school reading tutors will begin with teaching phonics, basic reading skills, vocabulary, and spelling. More advanced tutoring topics will explore reading comprehension, word meaning, critical thinking skills and more.

Writing

Mastering Written Communication Skills

Having a strong foundation in writing is a vital skill that students will benefit from for their entire lives. Writing allows us to logically organize and communicate ideas efficiently and effectively. Our experienced writing tutors understand the power of writing and the effect it can have in school and beyond.

We offer writing skills as part of a student’s learning program to improve skills in grammar, punctuation, capitalization, sentence writing, paragraph writing and more.

Mathematics

Preparing For Math Challenges

Our elementary school math tutoring program focuses on building a strong foundation of math skills that students will use for later learning.

Our elementary school math tutors will help students master skills in number formation, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals and percents. We aim to make math easy to understand by emphasizing math skills and problem-solving skills.

Study Skills

Building A Lifetime Of Good Study Habits

Sometimes poor academic performance is attributed to a lack of strong study skills. It’s especially important to develop study skills in elementary school so that students have this resource to be able to succeed in school and beyond.

Our tutoring programs include instruction in study skills that will help students learn to organize, complete assignments, prepare for projects and improve overall time management skills, reference skills and more. Your student will notice immense growth in all school subjects when he or she feels in control of their studies.

K–3rd Grade FAQs

  • Reading benchmarks vary but signs your child may be below grade level include difficulty sounding out words, avoiding books, or struggling to retell a simple story. If you’re unsure, Huntington Learning Center offers a comprehensive academic evaluation that measures your child’s reading fluency, comprehension, and decoding skills to identify gaps and create a personalized learning plan.

  • Warning signs can include difficulty recognizing letters and numbers, reversing letters, poor fine motor skills, trouble following directions, or low confidence in the classroom. Huntington’s early academic intervention identifies these learning obstacles and provides targeted instruction to help your child succeed from the start.

  • While some letter or number reversals are developmentally typical in early readers, consistent issues beyond first grade may indicate a learning difference. Huntington Learning Center’s academic evaluations assess reading and writing skills and can uncover whether additional support is needed.

  • Building confidence starts with consistency, praise, and support. At Huntington, our certified tutors use individualized instruction to improve academic performance and self-esteem. We celebrate small wins that build motivation and confidence over time.

  • A common guideline is 10 minutes per grade level each night. For example, a 1st grader might spend 10 minutes, while a 3rd grader may have 30 minutes of homework. If your child is frequently overwhelmed or struggling to complete assignments, Huntington offers homework support and foundational skills development.

  • It’s unlikely. Students are expected to learn new material every day, and without support, learning gaps often widen. The earlier you address academic delays, the easier it is to help your child catch up. Huntington Learning Center offers proven, individualized programs that deliver measurable progress. In most cases, students don’t just benefit from guided instruction—they need it to get back on track.

  • Tutoring for younger learners should be engaging, structured, and focused on core skills like phonics, number sense, multisensory and early comprehension. Huntington tailors our curriculum to match your child’s pace and learning style, with sessions designed to build strong academic foundations.

4th–5th Grade FAQs

  • A sudden dislike often points to frustration, low confidence, or a gap in foundational skills. Children at this age begin comparing themselves to peers, and struggling students may withdraw. Huntington Learning Center helps uncover the root cause and rebuilds skills and confidence with personalized support.

  • If your child has consistent difficulty completing assignments, low test scores, or avoids schoolwork, it’s time for intervention. Huntington’s academic evaluation identifies whether your child needs enrichment or structured tutoring to catch up.

  • Reading comprehension, vocabulary, writing skills, and math operations like fractions, multiplication, and long division are critical. These core areas form the foundation for middle school success and are key parts of Huntington’s curriculum.

  • Huntington not only strengthens academic skills but also teaches study skills such as time management, task initiation, and organization. These habits help students transition to more independent learning in middle school.

  • Ask specific questions about grade-level expectations, recent assessments, and classroom behaviors. Let them know you’re seeking outside support. Huntington Learning Center can partner with teachers to align goals and reinforce classroom instruction.

  • School intervention is often time-limited and built on generalized strategies. It may only address recent academic issues and is typically constrained by curriculum and resources. In contrast, Huntington’s tutoring is individualized, intensive, and data-driven. We go as far back as needed to close foundational learning gaps and accelerate progress—giving students a faster, more effective path to success.

  • Yes. Many capable students lack executive function skills such as planning, time management, and focus. Huntington incorporates executive function coaching into academic programs to help students thrive in and out of the classroom.
