Test Prep Tutoring For The PSAT

Taking the PSAT is a crucial step in high school as it prepares students for the SAT, enhances their chances of getting into their preferred colleges, and qualifies them for scholarships like the National Merit Scholarship. Although the PSAT is optional, students who engage in PSAT prep consistently achieve higher scores and perform better on the SAT. At Huntington, our PSAT prep courses build a strong foundation for academic success and confidence.

What Is The PSAT?

The PSAT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test) is a preparatory test for the SAT, offering practice and experience. It is shorter than the SAT, consisting of Evidence-Based Reading and Writing and Math sections. While PSAT scores are not used for college admissions, the test is significant for its role in qualifying students for the National Merit Scholarship. Each year, over 1.5 million students take the PSAT/NMSQT in their junior and senior years, aiming to qualify for scholarships and enhance their college applications.

PSAT FAQs

  • The PSAT is composed of two parts: Reading & Writing and Math. It is 2 hours and 14 minutes long.

The Reading & Writing section features numerous short passages, ranging from 25 to 150 words in length, covering various topics and writing styles, each followed by a single multiple-choice question. The section contains 54 questions in 64 minutes, divided equally between two modules:

    • Module 1
      • 32 Minutes
      • 27 Questions
    • Module 2
      • 32 Minutes
      • 27 Questions

The Math section assesses computation and reasoning skills through multiple-choice and student-produced response questions that measure fluency, understanding, and application of essential math concepts and skills, including Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry & Trigonometry, and Problem-Solving & Data Analysis. The section contains 44 questions in 70 minutes, divided equally between two modules:

    • Module 1
      • 35 Minutes
      • 22 Questions
    • Module 2
      • 35 Minutes
      • 22 Questions
  • The PSAT is offered once a year, in the Fall. A student can take the PSAT in the 9th, 10th and/or 11th grade, and can only qualify for scholarships with the 11th grade score. The PSAT/NMSQT® is offered in the fall to students in 10th and 11th grade and may qualify for scholarships with their 11th grade score.

  • Although both tests are structured very similarly, they serve two different purposes. The PSAT is not used for college admissions, but it can produce recognition and scholarships for students with the highest scores. Taking the PSAT provides practice and helps students get a sense for taking the SAT, which is used for college admissions.
