Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth Academic Talent Search (CTY Talent Search)

What is the CTY Talent Search?

Founded in 1979, the CTY Talent Search is a program offered through Johns Hopkins University that identifies, assesses, and recognizes the academic talents of young people across the country and around the world. Students in grades 2 through 8 qualify for the CTY Talent Search by meeting the following academic criteria:

  • Achieve scores at or above the 95th percentile or higher on a nationally normed test (see below for details);
  • Earn scores at advanced levels (advanced proficiency, distinguished, honors, etc.) on state tests or
  • Demonstrate superior academic performance.

Students who meet such criteria are then invited to participate in the CTY Talent Search. Benefits of this program include:

  • Determining your child's full academic capabilities by taking above-grade-level tests designed for older students
  • Gaining a clear picture of your child's academic strengths to assist with future educational planning
  • Qualifying for Johns Hopkins' Civic Leadership Institute
  • Recognition for academic talent, which can help build confidence
  • Opportunities to participate in CTY's summer and online enrichment courses

Students who participate in the CTY Talent Search will take a nationally normed test, at a level above their current school grade level. This test will provide specific information about the student's academic abilities, as well as compare that student to all others who took the same test in the same year.

Students test according to their choice of one of the following scenarios:

Test Name For Students
in Grades
Location Format
ACT 7-8 Test locations Paper and pencil
SAT 7-8 Test locations Paper and pencil
SCAT 2-8 Test centers Computerized
STB 5-8 Test centers Computerized

The tests vary in length. The shortest test is the SCAT test; the longest test is the SAT and ACT. The tests also vary in content, locations, and test dates. Most students in grades 7 and 8 take either the SAT or the ACT. The SAT and ACT are standardized, nationally recognized tests administered throughout the US under controlled, timed conditions. The SAT and ACT both objectively measure the reading and mathematical abilities that a student has developed both in and out of school. The SAT is administered by the College Board, Princeton, NJ. The ACT is administered by ACT, Iowa City, IA. To determine which test is best suited, or locally available, for your child, speak to his or her guidance counselor.

After testing is completed, you will receive a copy of test results and guidance materials to help understand what your child's test scores mean and how to use them for planning your child's future education.

For more information on how to qualify, how to apply and what happens after the test, contact the CTY Talent Search directly at ctyinfo@jhu.edu or (410) 735-6278.
